Simple and Delicious Homemade Chili Recipe

This homemade chili has been a family favorite that my grandfather started making years ago with just a few small changes to his original recipe. All of the ingredients come together easily in one pot in about 30 minutes or less.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 bell pepper, diced
  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • 1 (15oz) can kidney beans, NOT drained
  • 1 (15 oz) can diced tomatoes, NOT drained
  • 4 TBSP chili powder
  • 1 TBSP cumin
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp coriander
  • 1/8 tsp allspice
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Optional: shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, plain yogurt, sliced green onions

Instructions

  1. Place ground beef and diced bell peppers and onions in a pot. Cook until beef is brown and vegetables are tender.
  2. Add in the rest of the ingredients and stir well.
  3. Bring chili to a boil, then reduce to a simmer.
  4. Simmer for about 15-20 minutes to let the flavors come together.
  5. Top with cheddar cheese, sour cream or plain yogurt, and/or green onions if desired.

Notes

My husband loves to eat this served over mac and cheese.

Variations to Homemade Chili Recipe

  • Replace the ground beef with strips of steak or stew cubes
  • Add in a sprinkle of ground cayenne pepper for more heat
  • Substitute some of the chili powder with chipotle chili powder to jazz up the flavor
  • Serve the chili over mac and cheese for a chili mac effect
  • Use 2 cloves fresh, minced garlic instead of garlic powder
