How to slow down and truly experience a peaceful Advent

I have to admit. So often I get pulled into the hype of preparing for the commercial aspects of Christmas, that I forget to prepare spiritually as well in order to have a peaceful advent. Even the more religious tasks become another to-do to check off the list.
Yet, part of the hype is the desire to make this season meaningful and memorable, isn’t it? You know… that’s not a bad thing. The Advent and Christmas season is meant to be memorable because it is meant to point to something greater—the coming of our Savior and King.
As we look to the Advent season this year, let us lean into that desire for it to be a special time. But this time, let us lean into the true peace and joy that comes from Our Lord. We mustn’t forget that Advent’s true purpose is to be a time of preparation for the coming of our Savior and King—both His first coming and the next that is yet to come. May we each seek a truly peaceful Advent rooted in prayer and intention.
Hustle Brings Angst Instead of Peace
Bright lights, fancy toys, decadent desserts. All of these hail the most wonderful time of the year. Despite the sounds of laughter coming from each Christmas commercial, this season can also be a time of anxiety and stress. As we are pulled to each new and shiny object, we are also tempted away from what is truly important.
God speaks in the silence, yet this season is filled with so much noise that it can drown out His voice if we’re not careful. The noise beckons to us—shouting for us to keep up as we pile each new toy into our carts and activity into our schedule.
While there is nothing wrong with buying gifts and participating in joyous Christmas activities, we can do well to take a moment to pause and pivot our focus to Christ. Let Him guide you as you decide what is most important to focus on in this season. Imperfect as it may be, it is in doing so that we can then experience greater peace—and a more peaceful Advent for ourselves and our families.

Prayer Prepares the Heart for a Peaceful Advent
A great way to prepare for Advent is to pray for wisdom in this season before it even starts. Our minds naturally turn to list-making, cookie baking, and fun activities as Advent approaches. It’s a time to also focus on how we can turn our hearts more toward Our Lord as well. Is there a special devotion you can do during this time? The St. Andrew’s Novena is one of my favorites!
As we continue through the season, it’s helpful to set aside regular time to pray and receive the sacraments. I know—one more thing to do, right? But what if it doesn’t have to be? You can open each prayer time with a prayer asking for renewed focus on what is truly important—both in this season and in the year to come.
Despite our greatest efforts, there is a high chance that we will get swept up in some of the craziness of the season. But don’t let that discourage you. Take it as another opportunity to turn to God. Allow each action, each activity, and each interaction to be an act of prayer. Ask Our Lord to fill you with His joy in order to spread it to those around you.

The Heart Prepares the Family for a Peaceful Advent
This change of heart doesn’t happen overnight, and quite honestly, may not even fully manifest itself at all this Christmas. Yet that shouldn’t stop you from leading your family by your example. You may not necessarily feel it, but God’s grace will be there leading you as you lead your family.
Start by determining what your family needs to focus on in this season. Many times it’s helpful to pick a virtue that has been lacking. You’ll know because the lack of it will be felt. However, if you’re still struggling to come up with something, this list might help.
As you make your Advent and Christmas plans (like these ones), think of ways to incorporate this virtue into your everyday life. While you could go out in the community, I’m betting that there are plenty of opportunities to practice it right in your home. I know that there are so many things that you want to focus on and that there are so many things to do. Yet, I’m encouraging you to remember to plan your Advent and Christmas with an open hand and trust that God has a beautiful plan for it all—a plan that leads to a peaceful Advent.
