I didn’t want to be like Job

Every time I heard any part of the story of Job, I was both inspired and terrified. I was inspired by his courage in the face of adversity, but man… I was terrified that some of his fate would befall me – especially the parts about losing his children.

After losing my grandmother when I was five, I carried this huge fear of losing the ones I love well into the early years of my marriage. I knew God would take care of them, but I avoided any type of prayer that would completely surrender my life, and those of the ones around me, to Him.

Avoiding these types of prayers made me feel like I was doing something to protect them, but in reality, I was just trying to protect myself. It’s funny how that happens, isn’t it?

While I may have decided that completely surrendering wasn’t for me, God wasn’t going to give up on me that easily. Instead, He worked on my heart and asked me over and over again to trust Him. Over time, ever so slowly, He removed the bricks that had formed a wall around my heart. …a wall that had kept me from trusting Him fully. …a wall that kept me from the fullness of His hope. Then, one day in tears, I lifted my heart to Him and surrendered.

There are still days where I am tempted to despair in a difficult situation, or want to hold onto someone or something too tightly. Then He gently reminds me to trust Him and hope in His promises through prayer, spiritual reading, and Bible verses about hope in hard times like the ones below.

7 Bible Verses about Hope in Hard Times

So many of these verses point to a God who has a plan for our good – even in the pain and suffering of life. We may not understand it. We may despair. Yet our Lord asks to not give up hope as we navigate through the hard times. He is and always will be with us.

Colossians 1:17

He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Proverbs 19:21

Many are the plans of the human heart, but it is the decision of the LORD that endures.

Psalm 27:1-3

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? The LORD is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid? When evildoers come at me to devour my flesh, These my enemies and foes themselves stumble and fall. Though an army encamp against me, my heart does not fear; Though war be waged against me, even then do I trust.

Jeremiah 29:11-13

For I know well the plans I have in mind for you—oracle of the LORD—plans for your welfare and not for woe, so as to give you a future of hope. When you call me, and come and pray to me, I will listen to you. When you look for me, you will find me. Yes, when you seek me with all your heart…

John 16:33

…I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.”

Philippians 4:6-9

Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you

James 1:2-6

Consider it all joy, my brothers, when you encounter various trials, for you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. And let perseverance be perfect, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. But if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and he will be given it. But he should ask in faith, not doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed about by the wind

Whatever you may be going through right now, I pray that these Bible verses have encouraged you to trust and hope in the Lord. This won’t last forever.
