Have you ever set a goal, and then completely forgotten about it?
Yeah, me too…. Totally guilty of that over here.
Why do you think that is?
No, really. Think about the last goal that you set and forgot about.
Why do you think you forgot about it?
…………………….
It’s because your goal isn’t completely in line with your priorities!
So you either need to change your goal to fit your priorities or adjust your priorities and create a new goal that is more in line with what you’re hoping to achieve.
A really easy example of this from my own life is in business.
I’ve spent much of my motherhood trying to start some kind of business:
- Making and selling candles
- Selling Young Living Essential Oils
- Selling supplements
- Offering my services as a virtual assistant
- Even this blog was started with the intent of turning it into a business
I created goals for each of those businesses, but I didn’t treat those businesses as priorities in my life. I may have said that they were a priority, but I never truly believed that they were so I never hit my goals.
I realized that if I ever wanted to create a business coaching other moms how to experience peace in their lives, then I was going to have to make it a priority.
So I created goals that first focused on helping me establish my business as a priority in my life.
I did things like:
- Hire a business coach
- Set aside work hours every single day
- Network and tell other people about my business every single day
- Create an offer
- Form a Facebook group where I could start serving in a leadership role
One of the most important things I did, and continue to do, to help me establish this business as a priority was to keep reminding myself why this is a priority and to remove the excuses that wormed their way into my mind of why it shouldn’t be.
To be completely honest, those excuses had more to do with my own worth than anything else. Those excuses would say:
- You’re not worthy
- There are others who can help these moms a lot better than you can
- No one needs you
- You have nothing of value to offer
I saw this same pattern throughout all of the decisions and goals that I tried to set in my life. I found that my identity was constantly being attacked, and I’m taking the necessary action of facing it with the truth.
As you think through this, I want you to be really honest with yourself about the lies and excuses that you are facing every day. Maybe this is the first time you’ve really thought about it, and that’s okay. The important thing for now is to understand and identify the lies that are keeping you from following through on what’s truly important to you.
I’m not going to get into how to handle all of those lies today, but scripture, and a good friend, mentor, or coach are amazing assets to have as you battle through them.
While I may have used the example of starting a business, this holds true for each area of your life and the areas that you identify as priorities for you.
So, going back to our original thought….
I want you to go and identify what your priorities are in your life. Then decide on 3 goals that you want to work on for the next 3 months that are most in line with your priorities and this particular season in your life.
I’d love it if you would share them in the comments!
