A Child’s Mission Statement

by Leave a Comment

Anyone else going through the back to school attitude adjustment with your kids?

No – just me? Alrighty then…

Well, I’ve decided that I needed to come up with a child’s mission statement for the kids as part of their formation.

John and I have been talking about our family’s mission statement for a while now, so it’s not really anything new for us. Anyways…

The first full week of school has had it’s share of difficulties. I neglected to take care of myself, so I caught a lovely cold from John; John also had the cold and has been working a bit more (aka the kids and I don’t see him as much); and the kids were more stimulated and over-tired from this new school routine.

In all of this there has been more bickering and fighting among the kids, and more disrespect and deceit directed at us. With the increased stress, John and I are also not always responding in the most loving of ways.

Last week we went over how we’re working on being more intentional in the day to day. This mission statement is an impromptu addition to that. In leadership books and podcasts that I’ve read and listened to, they’ve talked about the importance of repeating the mission statement on a daily basis. My goal is to have the kids repeat it before or after morning prayer time each day. Hopefully this will just further instill in them some of the values we have for our family, and know what is expected of them.

A Child’s Mission Statement

We are the Nelson Family. We love God. We love each other. We are kind to one another. We speak nicely to each other. We listen to each other. We help one another. We share with one another. We obey the rules.
